The web-based software kiosk - the self-service portal for users

 In Press

Nuremberg, January 2019:

With the Install.Desk software distribution solution, FCS has created an effective relief for administrators. It helps to ensure a homogeneous software environment on all devices quickly and easily. This can even happen outside of scheduled working hours. Install.Desk enables customers to distribute software applications from a central location to the clients in the company and to keep track of the installation status at all times. Various additional modules also make the work routine easier for the administrators. With the latest "Software Kiosk" module, FCS gives company employees the opportunity to decide for themselves which applications they want to install and when.

The web-based software kiosk thus serves as a “pull system” for users. It runs in every common browser and has a modern web design.

In Install.Desk, the administrator determines which applications in the form of jobs or packages are released for which user group. All further steps are the responsibility of the employees themselves. The IT department is thus relieved of a wide range of installation tasks. The network administrator also has the option of restricting access to jobs and packages for certain users, he can explicitly release them for AD groups, distribution groups or devices.

The employees access the kiosk with their familiar Windows logon, where users can see all the jobs or packages that have been released for them. You then decide for yourself whether you want to install it immediately, the next time you restart, or at a time of your choosing. In order to ensure an overview for the user, FCS has added the menu items "Current installations" and "Installation history" to the additional module. There, users get an overview of which installations are currently running or which they have already successfully completed.

The kiosk is a web solution that communicates with Install.Desk via a REST API. The prerequisite for this is that both the kiosk and the REST API are installed on the web server. In addition, of course, there must be access to the internal Active Directory in order to be able to verify the Windows logon.

Automated software and operations distribution with Install.Desk

With Install.Desk, FCS offers a solution that is easy to learn and ideally suited for the main activities involved in software distribution. With uniform revision levels of all installed applications, you can create a basis for faster work and relieve your helpdesk. The formation of distribution groups and distribution packages also simplifies the software distribution for specific user groups and functional areas. Your administrators are effectively supported by Install.Desk and can thus devote themselves to other important tasks.

Install.Desk can also be supplemented with various additional modules:

  • The "Active Directory Manager" enables distribution based on Active Directory groups. In the Install.Desk manager console, software packages (jobs) can be linked to such groups and a basic configuration can be defined for each group.
  • The "OS Packager" supports with a wizard to quickly and easily create complete answer files for operating system setups. These are necessary to install the Windows operating system without user prompts and with the same basic settings.
  • The add-on module "Vulnerability Management" detects critical security gaps in the installed software on the clients and servers. In these cases, the system suggests automatic reaction routines via installed jobs and packages in order to eliminate the risks with the help of CVSS and CVE-certified recommendations for action.
  • NEW: The "Software Kiosk"
